F - N Terms

Flat-panel Antenna – Same as patch antenna

Frequency – The number of cycles (Hertz) per second contained in an electromagnetic RF spectrum

Fresnel Zone – Named after Augustin Jean-Fresnel, is the infinite ellipsoid radiation pattern emitted from an RF antenna

Full-duplex – Allows the transmission and reception of data simultaneously

Gain – Term used to describe an increase in signal strength either actively with amplifiers or passively with high-gain antennas

Grid Antenna – Reflector antenna made of tubular or wire-mesh rather than solid or solid perforated

Grounding – Connecting antennas and other elements to an earth ground—usually a copper rod driven into the earth

Guyed Tower – A broadcast tower that requires supporting cables (guy wires) for support and stability

Heliax – A brand name for a spiral-copper shielded (coaxial) cable

HSS – Hub Site Synchonization – A technology that allows all collocated transmitters at a tower site to transmit and receive in a synchronized manner

IDU – Indoor Unit – power injector and multiplexing unit associated with an OutDoor Unit

Latency – Another term for delay or the additional amount of time required to perform an operation or transmit and receive data

Lightning Protection – Devices used to divert high-voltage electrostatic pulses (lightning) to earth ground thus protecting the protected equipment

LOS – Line-Of-Sight

Microwave – Electromagnetic RF energy in the 1000 MHz range and above

MIMO – Multiple In, Multiple Out

Modulation – In RF, the manner in which data is injected onto the base carrier frequency

nLOS – near Line-Of-Sight

NLOS – Non Line-Of-Sight
